Skyliner Dangling Sky
Wry story-song 5:42 Suno v5.5
The first parks day starts at Pop Century and moves through the Skyliner, Epcot, and a missed Remy line before Soarin', Guardians, and a monorail loop. By the end, the family has sunscreen, strollers, snacks, and a hard-earned room to come back to.
Where it came from
I prompted this one on the Skyliner itself: first park morning, actually dangling over the sky of the title, everybody trading what they were most excited about. Toy Story and Slinky Dog Dash kept coming up, so I asked for Randy Newman: that warm, piano-plunking, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” storyteller voice felt like the obvious soundtrack for the day we thought we were about to have.
What came back was more Tom Waits than Randy Newman. Trade one iconoclast for another; maybe Waits is just easier to imitate. But the wry, sardonic thing the song does turned out to be the honest register anyway: we never did make it to Slinky Dog that day.
It’s also the longest single in the catalog, which is about right. Three parks in one day — excited going out, absolutely wrung out coming home.
Words from the week
Intro: crooked piano, dry spoken-sung vocal
Well, we woke up at Pop Century With ambition in our eyes And took the Skyliner to Epcot Dangling through the Florida skies
Verse 1: wry, conversational
We were headed out for Remy That little rat from France But the line was wrapped around the world So we did not take that chance
We said, “How about Soarin’?” That seemed like a decent plan They had America’s two-fifty Flying over all the land
There were fireworks over mountains There were wheat fields, flags, and more And the children seemed impressed enough For folks who’d been up since four
Chorus: dry, warm, singable
It was our first parks day And we were doing fine Running on magic And standing in line
We had snacks, we had strollers We had sunscreen on our skin And every time the day got bigger We just jumped right in
Verse 2: Guardians section
Then Henry found the galaxy And would not let it go So we rode Guardians twice that day Because rider swap said so
Once he flew through space with Mama Once he flew through space with Dad Frances didn’t get to ride it Which I’ll admit looked pretty bad
But she met Mickey, Minnie, Goofy While the rockets made us spin And sometimes in a family That’s what you call a win
Chorus: slightly bigger
It was our first parks day And we were doing fine Running on magic And standing in line
We had plans, we had sunshine We had sweat upon our chin And every time the day got bigger We just jumped right in
Verse 3: Monorail / Magic Kingdom
Then we rode the Monorail Like transportation kings Went sailing toward the Kingdom Full of hope and other things
We took that loop around again A bonus ride for free The children got two Monorails And honestly, so did we
Nobody was angry Nobody made a scene We just took the scenic route On Disney’s finest machine
Bridge: piano break, dry vocal
Round and round the Monorail Past the same old view Sometimes the magic takes you there Sometimes it takes you two
Verse 4: Magic Kingdom rides
Then Big Thunder called to Frances For her first rollercoaster ride She came down off that mountain With some thunder still inside
We escaped the heat with Woody And Jessie for a while Then Philharmagic saved us With Donald Duck in style
Mine Train kept us moving Tiana took us down Through the bayou and the music On the wettest ride in town
Chorus: warmer
It was our first parks day And we were doing fine Running on magic And standing in line
We had courage, we had chaos We had children closing in And every time the day got bigger We just jumped right in
Verse 5: Minnie Van / dinner
Then a Minnie Van came rolling Like salvation painted red And carried us to Pop Century Where we found our room and beds
The kids looked at the pillows Like they’d found the promised land And dinner sounded foolish To our tired little band
But parents are negotiators In the fading evening light We made our little speeches And we tried with all our might
Final Chorus: full band but still loose
It was our first parks day And we were doing fine Running on magic And standing in line
We had rides, we had sunshine We had no more steps within And every time the day got bigger We just jumped right in
Outro: solo piano, spoken-sung, deadpan
We asked them all politely We bargained now and then We said, “Come on, let’s go to dinner” And we think we managed to convince them
